Admissions Process to Middle School and Upper School

At Quest to Learn, like all District 2 Choice schools, we use our own selection criteria to enroll students we think will be the best fit for success with our innovative and hands-on Quest curriculum.
Some NYC schools require specific test scores, some use writing samples as a selection tool, and others require an audition in order to be accepted. At Quest, Informed Choice means that students and families must demonstrate an understanding of Quest’s unique approach to curriculum and that they have actively chosen Quest as the right school for their child by attending an open house.

At Quest, we believe that students and families who are excited by and want to participate in our unique curriculum create a vibrant learning environment and engaged school community.
After researching and selecting schools, students submit their ranked choices of schools to the Department of Education, which then matches students to schools.

Middle School
What is the admissions process for Quest to Learn?
Quest to Learn is a District 2 Limited Unscreened school. Prospective families must show Informed Choice by attending one Open House. As a District 2 priority school, families who reside in or attend elementary school in District 2 and have attended an information session will be eligible for consideration during the matching process. With a unique learning model, it is important to us that families understand the curricular focus and educational philosophy of Quest. Therefore, we do not require report cards, attendance records, examinations, or interviews as part of the admissions process.
When can I attend an Open House?
Open Houses run during the Fall and Winter seasons in the evening (5pm–6pm), and provide a video presentation of a typical 6+ grade classroom. Families may attend an Open House at the start of their child’s fifth grade year.
How do I sign up for an Open House?
Open House information is posted on our website at the start of every fall along with registration information and a direct link. You may also click here to sign up for an Open House.
What if our family does not reside or attend elementary school in District 2?
If your family does not reside in or attend elementary school in District 2 note that Quest to Learn is a citywide, open enrollment school. We offer seats to students from all the districts across New York City and we are proud to be a part of the New York City, Department of Education Diversity in Admission Initiative.
What happens after I attend an information session?
When you arrive at an information session, it is important that you sign in to confirm your attendance. This information is used to confirm your eligibility in the application process. After attending an information session, you may work with your child’s elementary school Guidance Counselor to rank Quest to Learn on your Middle School application. The Department of Education uses your Middle School application and our attendance records from each information session to complete the matching process in the Spring of your child’s fifth grade year.
When are Middle School applications due?
Middle School applications are often due in the first week of December. Please speak with your elementary school Guidance Counselor and check the Department of Education website frequently in the Fall for deadline information.
What are the next steps if my child is accepted to Quest to Learn?
Congratulations! If your child is accepted to Quest to Learn, they will be given the opportunity to attend an Open House for incoming 6th grade families where they will meet their teachers, participate in game-like activities, and receive pertinent information such as supply lists and summer assignments.
What happens if I meet all of the eligibility criteria and my child is not offered a seat at Quest to Learn?
Middle School families who are not matched with the school of their choice have the opportunity to submit an application for an appeal. This process is best supported by the elementary school Guidance Counselor and Office of Student Enrollment.
How many seats are available for the 6th grade?
On average, incoming 6th grade classes at Quest to Learn reach a maximum of 100–110 students.
What if I find out about Quest to Learn after the Application Process?
All prospective families who have missed the application period or are seeking a mid-year or end-of-the year transfer must contact the Office of Student Enrollment directly.
What if I attend an information session and I forgot to sign in?

Upper School
What is the admissions process for Quest to Learn?
Quest to Learn is a District 2 Limited Unscreened School. Prospective families must show Informed Choice by attending one Open House or Citywide High School Fair. As a District 2 priority school, families who reside or attend middle school in District 2 and have attended an Open House or Citywide High School Fair will be eligible for consideration during the matching process. With a unique learning model, it is important to us that families understand the curricular focus and educational philosophy of Quest. Therefore, we do not require report cards, attendance records, examinations, or interviews as part of the admissions process.

Open Houses commence in the latter part of September and end at the beginning of December.
