Art for Progress is proud to be hosting a Free Summer Arts Program

June 1, 2022 Ruben Gauthier In the Press

Thank you for your interest in the Art for Progress/Matisse Summer Arts and Music Program! We are excited to get back to an in-person program this summer and we can’t wait to meet all of you! The dates this year will be from July 5th through August 12th and classes and workshops will be held on both weekdays and weekends to accommodate as many people’s schedules as possible. The program will be hosted in Chelsea mostly at the Bayard Rustin Educational Complex, 351 West 18th Street, but will likely include sessions at other locations in Chelsea, including MCM Creative Studios and possibly some park meet-ups in Manhattan and Brooklyn as well.

Every year we offer classes and workshops covering a variety of topics relating to professional careers in music and in the various art media. Our goal is to explore the aspects of an artist’s life that are rarely taught in school. We aim to help prepare participants in our program to meet the challenges of an arts career with an expanding base of knowledge, a healthy, productive mindset, and real-world insights into the workings of the arts industries.

Each year we also bring in guest artist/speakers, each of whom is a star in their field, to share stories and wisdom they have acquired throughout their development as an artist and a professional.

Past Guest Speakers include:

Afua Richardson – (Marvel’s World of Wakanda, DC, Image Comics)

Dezron Douglas – (Trey Anastasio Band)

James Genus – (Saturday Night Live Band)

Sasha Dobson – (Norah Jones)

Ze Luis – (Caetano Veloso, Bebel Gilberto)

Lane Twithchell – (MOMA Collection)

Holt McCallany – (Nightmare Alley, Mindhunter, Fight Club)

Click the link below to sign up for the program and you’ll have an opportunity to choose topics that interest you, and to make suggestions about what other topics you would like to learn about. We will be designing the curriculum based upon your feedback so that we can best serve your needs. We work with fantastic teaching artists in each discipline to offer the most informative and dynamic program possible. See below for some past classes and workshops.
